  • Recovery Services vaults protect VMs, Azure Files, SQL and SAP inside VMs, and on-premises workloads through the MARS, MABS or DPM agents.
  • Backup vaults are the newer vault type for blob, disk and database workloads.
  • A backup policy defines the schedule plus retention: daily, weekly, monthly and yearly rules.
  • Instant restore keeps snapshots locally for one to five days, then the vault tier holds the long-term recovery points.
  • Soft delete is on by default with a 14-day period that can be extended; immutable vault and multi-user authorization harden the vault.
  • Restore options for a VM are create a new VM, restore disks, replace an existing disk, or file-level recovery.

Traps & distractors

  • Treating Azure Site Recovery as a backup. Site Recovery is replication and disaster recovery, not retention.
  • Deleting a Recovery Services vault while it still holds recovery points - soft delete blocks this until the data expires.
  • Assuming the backup policy is taken from the VM. The vault's policy controls the schedule and retention.
  • Forgetting to stop backup before unregistering a VM, which can leave the vault unable to delete.
  • Confusing operational (snapshot) recovery points with vaulted recovery points when reasoning about retention.
